A 28-year-old man pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with Saskatoon’s first homicide of 2017.

Daniel Ivan Joseph Forest admitted he caused the death of 45-year-old Rodney Wailing on Jan. 11, 2017. His sentencing was adjourned until September to allow time for a pre-sentence report that will canvass Gladue factors: unique circumstances pertaining to Indigenous offenders that must be taken into account when sentencing.

Forest was initially charged with second-degree murder after Wailing was found injured in a home in the 200 block of Avenue I South. He died in hospital from injuries believed to have resulted from an assault.

On Jan. 13, police asked for the public’s help locating Forest, who was wanted for questioning in the case. Forest turned himself in to police the next day.
