Appearing by video link in Saskatoon provincial court, Sheritta Kahpeaysewat proclaimed her innocence in front of a courtroom filled with family and friends of Colin Sutherland, the man she is accused of killing.
“I have a lot to defend myself with,” the 30-year-old woman said. “I’m not going to let this slide.”
Kahpeaysewat said her family has been supporting her in court and reiterated what she said during her first court appearance on Tuesday: that she has no criminal record. The judge acknowledged her emotional distress and said her legal aid lawyer, Val Harvey, will be present when the case is back in court on April 11.
Sutherland, 54, was found dead in his apartment in the 200 block of Fifth Avenue North late Sunday night. Kahpeaysewat is charged with second-degree murder.
On Tuesday, Sutherland’s daughter confirmed the two were a couple, but said she didn’t get to know her father’s girlfriend over the approximate year they had been dating. A friend of Kahpeaysewat’s alluded to tension within the relationship.
