A Saskatoon couple is heading to prison for tying up and assaulting a 64-year-old man while his ex gathered her belongings.

The victim was bound to a chair with extension cords and had a head injury and a puncture wound in his arm. Police saw Ashley McKay, 29, carrying a bat as she left the home on Jan. 14. Her boyfriend, 24-year-old Clifford Daniels, was inside and had a “pick-like” object on him, a Saskatoon provincial courtroom heard.

The man told police that Daniels and McKay pushed their way into his house in the 1300 block of 20th Street West along with his ex, a woman the couple referred to as their “street auntie,” Crown prosecutor Dan Dahl said during Daniel’s sentencing hearing on Monday.

According to the facts presented in court, the woman went to grab some clothing; when she came back, Daniels asked her if he should tie the man up. The woman replied, “Do whatever you want.”

It’s believed the violence was payback for an alleged assault against the woman, Dahl told court.

Daniels and McKay pleaded guilty to breaking and entering with assault and unlawful confinement. Daniels also pleaded guilty to carrying a concealed weapon and threatening to kill the victim.

Court heard he has a criminal record riddled with assault convictions. Defence lawyer Tim Nolin said Daniels is a methamphetamine user and regrets how things escalated during the break and enter. He is motivated to get more education, a job and take violence programming in prison, Nolin told court.

Judge Marilyn Gray called the home invasion “shocking to even the most hardened individual in these courts” and said Daniels will continue to find himself imprisoned unless he takes programming. She sentenced him to four years in prison after accepting a joint submission from the Crown and defence.

McKay was sentenced to a three-year penitentiary term earlier this month.
