Two men made their first court appearances after being charged in the 2016 death of Patrick Dong, whose body was found on the outskirts of Saskatoon.

Wearing a jacket over his orange jail-issued sweatshirt, Terry Rene Quewezance, 36, indicated he was aware of his charges: first-degree murder, kidnapping and unlawful confinement.

Claude Louis Gauthier sat in the adjacent prisoner’s box in a rumpled suit jacket. He asked for his charges to be read aloud.

Gauthier, 26, is charged with manslaughter, kidnapping and unlawful confinement.

Both men were arrested and charged on Wednesday — just over a year after Dong, 37, was found in a rural area southwest of Saskatoon on Oct. 23, 2016.

The first person to be charged in connection with Dong’s death was an 18-year-old woman from Saskatoon, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act because she was 17 at the time of Dong’s death.

She is charged with first-degree murder. During the teen’s first court appearance, the Crown indicated an adult sentence will be sought if the accused pleads guilty or is convicted.

Her case has been set for a preliminary hearing in January. Quewezance and Gauthier are scheduled to make their next court appearance on Nov. 9.
